SAS at the Cloud City
SAS Director gave a talk on attracting foreign professors.
From August 27th to 29th, the BRICS International Innovation Forum "Cloud City" took place in Moscow.
Andrey Shcherbenok, the Director of the School of Advanced Studies (SAS), University of Tyumen participated in the event. During the panel discussion "Nomad Choice. What to Learn From International Working Experience," he, along with colleagues, discussed the development of creative, scientific cities, and business communities within them as magnets for innovators of new technologies and ideas.
Andrey shared insights about the attraction of foreign professors to the School of Advanced Studies. Since 2017, SAS has welcomed around 50 full-time faculty with international experience in various fields. Drawing from his own experience, Andrey highlighted three principles that guide the recruitment of professors from other countries.
Firstly, the importance of creating conditions for professional growth so that the experience gained in one institution aids them in shaping their further academic journey. Secondly, the necessity of establishing common norms for a collective composed of representatives from diverse cultures, where what's acceptable for one might be unacceptable for another. Thirdly, the understanding that a specialist should have the opportunity to showcase their strengths rather than conform to the existing system. Besides these principles, SAS has implemented an institutional framework, focusing on interdisciplinary research (a subject often discussed but rarely realized), its novelty (the School was built from the ground up, allowing for influence on its establishment and growth), and the formation of a community where people are eager to engage with each other.
