Introduction to Enneads: I-III

This course is a focused introduction to Plotinus’ Enneads, concentrating on the first three of Porphyry’s sixfold division. Our aim is to understand the metaphysical vision of Plotinus, the founder of Neoplatonism, through rigorous engagement with the primary text, using the Gerson edition. We will begin with the human condition and the question of happiness (Ennead I), move to cosmology and natural philosophy (Ennead II), and finally turn to the fate of the soul, providence, and the metaphysics of time and eternity (Ennead III). Special attention will be given to Plotinus’ account of the One, Intellect, and Soul as metaphysical principles. Alongside reading and discussion, students will be guided to develop interpretive and logical skills in engaging with Plotinus’ dense, conceptually challenging style. The course includes three written tests and a final essay that synthesises the central metaphysical issues of the Enneads I–III.
