Russia and the Asian Century

As China aims to retake its central role in international affairs, the cultural, economic and political importance of East and South Asia rapidly grows. Millenary cultures of China and India along with other Asian neighbors challenge US-Europeam dominance and attempt to influence in the formation of a new world order. As the centre of gravity in international affairs gradually moves to Asia, many argue that the XXI Century is becoming the Asian Century. In this sense, Russia attempts to be recognized as an Asian power and therefore actively search to strengthen ties with Asian nations. Special attention deserves the Russia-China strategic partnership, which constitutes one of the main pillars of the international arena. As the power and influence of Asia gradually increases, it is imperative to improve the understanding of the region as well as the opportunities and risks for Russia.

This course takes us into a journey throughout East and South Asia, from the frozen tundra of Sakha to the Mango forests in Thailand, from the hermit kingdom of North Korea to the wealthy and globalized Singapore, from the forbidden city in Beijing to the Buddhist monasteries in Sri Lanka. The course concludes by reflecting on the growing tensions between China and USA in the East Asia and the future dynamics of the Russia-China-India triangle.
