Epistemologies, Ideologies, Education

The production and dissemination of knowledge are essential components of the educational process. However, questions regarding the nature, sources, and boundaries of knowledge, as well as the influence of social factors on what constitutes valid knowledge, generate intense theoretical and political discussions.

Why do some theories and pieces of information make it into textbooks and educational curricula, while others do not? To what extent should propositional knowledge or procedural knowledge be emphasized in education? Should educational institutions continue to adhere to the traditional European canon, or should they be more open to alternative perspectives? Can science only determine the criteria for justifying and validating beliefs, or should personal experience and emotions also play a role in the formation of new knowledge?

By examining and discussing philosophical and sociological perspectives on knowledge, students can gain a deeper understanding of current debates, acquire a specialized terminology, and apply this knowledge to specific educational contexts. The course culminates in a series of panel discussions on key issues related to the elective topic.
