Financial Law
The objective of this course is to serve as an overview of financial institutions and financial concepts and specifically how they are legally regulated in the Russian Federation and internationally. It is a logical continuation of the introductory course “Law in Social Order”, but all students interested in economics, finance or law can take it separately.
The course starts with an entry test for the purpose of preliminary assessment of students’ knowledge and understanding of financial terminology. During the course, we cover fundamentals of government and corporate finance in Russia, budget revenue (in the form of taxation on income and capital) and budget expenditure. We will discuss various methods a project or a business can be financed, including PPP (public-private partnership). In addition, the students are going to learn the concept of monetary systems, currencies and transactions, securities and other negotiable instruments. Finally, we are going to cover the institution of personal and business insurance and its regulation by law.
The course is intended to help students to better orient themselves in the financial world and its legal regulation and to research relevant sources. The course provides for biweekly delivery of team projects, performing a comparative analysis of regulation in Russia and a foreign jurisdiction.
