Bodies, Cultures, Societies

This course explores how the human body is played out in the social, cultural, historical, and political contexts in today’s world. From a multidisciplinary perspective, we explore various fields of interests where the body is of central significance. Students witness accounts of the human form within such diverse perspectives as sports, medicine, history, arts, cinema, virtuality, etc.

We will be asking ourselves questions such as: How important is the body and our perception of it for our lives? What is it that we do with our bodies but we don’t usually notice? What are the different modes of using/utilizing the human bodies? What can we do with our bodies, do we know their potentials? Students are equipped to understand better issues of personal identity and how it plays out in social life by having close encounters with a plethora of ideas and answers to those questions and will be able to critically think about their own place in the complex contemporary world they inhabit.
