Globalisation, Governance and the State

This course delves into the ongoing debate surrounding the impact of globalization on the role and governance capacity of the state. With the COVID-19 crisis and the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis as well as ongoing crisis in Ukraine, this question has become increasingly relevant. Some argue that the state is becoming obsolete, while others suggest a more nuanced perspective, recognizing that the state may have weakened in traditional roles but gained strength in other policy functions.

In addition, the course examines the impact of globalization on national regimes, peace and security, and the rise of transnational governance arrangements.

This course takes on comparative approach and considers the impact of globalization on countries within and outside of Europe, including BRICS, Asia, and Latin America. Finally, the course explores the future of globalization through forecasting and scenario-building.
