Dr. Rafael Contreras Luna is a Mexican scholar who received in 2017 his PhD from Durham University, United Kingdom. He holds a master’s degree from Saint Petersburg State University and a bachelor’s degree from Ibero-American University, Mexico City.

He has worked and collaborated with several universities in Russia (Samara, Saint Petersburg, Krasnoyarsk, Yakutsk). In 2022-23, Rafael worked as visiting professor at different prestigious universities such as Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, the University of Bucharest in Romania, and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Rafael’s research concerns politics in the Asia-Pacific region, Russia’s foreign policy in Asia, Russia’s “pivot to the East”, the Arctic, and geopolitics of outer space. He has also extensive knowledge on the ongoing political processes in the Americas, and in the fields of social philosophy and philosophy of science. He has published research articles in peer-reviewed journals on Russia-China ties, the Arctic, Asiatic Russia, and Russia-Southeast Asia relations.

Prof. Contreras Luna contributes to the SAS curriculum as an instructor for core disciplines “Philosophy: Great Books”, “Ecce Homo: Behold the Man”, “Meta-Narratives & Perspectives” and offering elective courses for the Anthropology & Sociology major.
