ABOUT SAS

The School of Advanced Studies (SAS), the University of Tyumen, is a groundbreaking, interdisciplinary research center and educational institution with a BA program along 6 fields of study. Established in 2017, within the Russian Government 5-100 Project, SAS serves as an international benchmark for universities across Russia. Unconventional educational formats and the international nature of the institution help implement innovative learning models and ensure access to best practices in research.

We are constantly looking to grow our faculty team. We are interested in recruiting academics who – as much as we are – are committed to our values of professionalism, academic excellence, and passion for research beyond disciplinary boundaries. We consider candidates who are willing to enthusiastically engage with the dynamic approach to both teaching and learning that are central to the work and study processes at SAS.

SAS provides a rare platform for educational experiment and innovative approaches and thus to become part of groundbreaking changes in the Russian higher education system. Furthermore, it is a chance to join an international team of keen faculty and researchers with PhDs acquired from leading universities worldwide.

SAS is located in Tyumen (Siberia, Russia), which is a prosperous city with a progressive outlook and numerous daily flights to Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Cultural amenities, medical infrastructure, numerous restaurants, cafes, and bars, as well as retail outlets, combine with natural surroundings that include famous hot springs and make Tyumen the “most comfortable city in Russia.” For the list of amenities, check out the official city website; for the intimate feel of the city as experienced by SAS students, see the video they produced.

SAS: THE INTERDISCIPLINARY MODEL

Transcending traditional single-discipline research approaches and academic departments, the faculty at SAS take active part in interdisciplinary research. The research teams work on SAS research projects integrating approaches and perspectives from different domains. The faculty researchers aim to contribute to the analysis of the fundamental challenges within the Russian and international academic circles. Incoming faculty either join existing research projects or organize their own. The interdisciplinary conversation begins at the Project Design Sessions, in which short-listed faculty candidates are invited to participate.

This broader vision for research at SAS aligns with our BA education, which is modeled on principles and values of interdisciplinarity. We are committed to the values of transformative, interdisciplinary education that still retains a necessary depth of knowledge in individual subjects. Our course structure gives students diverse opportunities for learning, blending core lectures with seminars, independent academic work, and group projects. We currently have 6 majors and a system of a constantly increasing number of elective courses.

CANDIDATE EXPECTATIONS

Teaching expectations:

At SAS, we make a special emphasis on offline teaching. We believe it to be more effective for both the learning process and the creation of an efficient and frequent communication beyond the classroom.

The SAS academic year is taught over four eight-week quarters. The teaching terms for the academic year are as follows:

  • Quarter 1: September 1 to October 22, 2022 (8 weeks)
  • Quarter 2: October 31 to December 24, 2022 (8 weeks)
  • Quarter 3: January 30 to March 25, 2023 (8 weeks)
  • Quarter 4: April 17 to June 10, 2023 (8 weeks)

SAS faculty teach a mixture of courses in their area of specialization, in the Core Curriculum, and offerings related to their current research. Courses are taught both individually and in shared formats. The vast majority of classes are taught as seminars with a class size up to 20 students.

You can expect to teach 5 courses, or the equivalent, across four quarters. A typical course consists of three 90-minute classes a week across eight weeks. The teaching workload includes course content preparation, marking of assessments, and providing individual feedback to students.

During the teaching terms, faculty commit to being available to all students, on campus, for 60 to 90 minutes a week, in our “Professor in the Box” tutor system.

Research expectations:

All our professors are also active researchers. In addition to teaching commitments, you will be expected to join a research team at SAS and to complete research that will lead to at least one publication, per year, in an international peer-reviewed journal (indexed in Web of Science Core Collection or Scopus Q1/Q2) or another significant research output at a comparable disciplinary standard for your field.

REQUIREMENTS OF APPLICANTS

  • Candidates must have a PhD (or be due to receive their degree by 31 July 2022).
  • Candidates should ideally have some teaching experience, preferably at the undergraduate level.
  • The candidates’ level of English should be sufficient for professional communication with international colleagues; knowledge of Russian is not required. Candidates must be able to work in teams and with students.
  • Candidates must be ready to relocate to Tyumen at least during the quarters when they have teaching load and engagements.

CONTRACTS BEING OFFERED BY SAS

This search is for a one-year contract which can be followed by a three-year contract that includes the possibility of unlimited renewals (there is nothing comparable to tenure in Russia). The contract involves 256 hours of teaching load, research activity, and administrative tasks. We can also consider short-term contracts (2 months at minimum) that include only teaching.
